Environmental permits in Romania: who needs one and how to get it

An environmental permit sets the conditions under which a business activity may operate without harming the environment. For many companies entering Romania, it is one of the first compliance steps.
Who needs one
It depends on the type of activity (its NACE/CAEN code), its capacity and its potential impact on air, water and soil. Low-impact activities may only need their notification filed.
Typical documents
- the application and the activity presentation sheet;
- company documents and proof of the right to use the premises;
- site plans and a description of the process flow;
- proof of payment of the fee.
How long it takes
It depends on how complex the activity is and how complete the file is. Most delays come from missing documents.
